Containers pile up in Cat Lai Terminal, Vietnam Maritime Administration establishes a forward command post

 03/08/2021

TTO - Cat Lai Terminal (Thu Duc city) these days is quite quiet, the volume of trucks is sparse. The customs clearance area is also deserted. However, the image recorded on August 2 shows that the container piled up in many rows.

These days, the number of containers stockpiled reaches the port’s maximum capacity, especially the capacity for imports reaches 100%.

On August 2, the Vietnam Maritime Administration (VMA) announced that it had issued a decision to establish a forward command post to ensure the operation of seaports in the southern region. They also announced a hotline to support import-export businesses in handling goods at Cat Lai Terminal.

This is the response of VMA after the Saigon Newport Corporation has just announced to stop receiving many types of cargoes at Cat Lai Terminal due to the rapid increase in the number of containers backlogged, which raised the risk of interruption

"If the number of containers reaches full capacity, the terminal will have to stop receiving cargo ships and wait for the cargo pick-up as some ports in the US and Europe did last year," said a representative of Saigon Newport Corporation.
